The Center for Education and Lifelong Learning of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki welcomes you to the Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy under the title “New trends in Media and Journalism: Turning crisis into opportunity”, a 60-hour hybrid course on site and and simultaneously online, for those who will not have the opportunity to attend in-person (zoom platform).

The Director of the Programme is Nikolaos Panagiotou, Associate Professor at School of Journalism & Mass Communications of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has been a DAAD Scholar at Deutsche Welle, Chevening Scholar of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office UK, RCAP Scholar from APU University Japan, Scholar to Beijing Foreign Studies University, Scholar at Sabanci University (Turkey), Scholar of the State of Luxembourg. He has an extensive research work which is currently funded from Google (DNI Initiative fund).

Aim

School of Journalism and Mass Communications of Aristotle University Thessaloniki (AUTh), Jean Monet of European Union Public Diplomacy along with other partners will organize this year the 5th Thessaloniki International Summer Academy on Media. THISAM will take place on 16-23 July 2021 under the title: “New trends in Media and Journalism: Turning crisis into opportunity”. Special emphasis will be given on the topics: 1. Disinformation, Science Journalism / News Literacy, 2. Crisis Communication, 3. New business models in Media Organisations. 4. Masterclass in Photojournalism “Practicing Peace Journalism through Photojournalism” The 5th International Summer Academy has made new international collaborations and it attendees have studied in high-ranking universities and worked in organizations from around the world, such as the Delegation of the European Commission in Greece and in Russia. As a result, it is expected to attract the interest of a large number of participants this year, consisting of Greek and foreign students of all levels and young professionals.

Objectives

Our top priority is to highlight the high level of Thessaloniki’s institutions and to make our city and region an international educational hub. It is an important international effort with an impact in the USA, China, Germany, Russia and beyond, which promotes our country and our city and aims to become an international forum for academics, students and professionals.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants will:

  • Acquire in-depth knowledge and training on important topics and cutting-edge developments in Media, Communication and Journalism.
  • Be part of a major forum where current issues and research developments are presented and discussed by distinguished international scholars.
  • Gain access to an active international academic and practitioner community dedicated to innovative learning approaches.

The program is addressed to students from Greece and abroad and professionals involved in the field of journalism and communication

Method

THISAM will be a hybrid event. It will take place onsite in Thessaloniki and at the same time online, for those who will not have the opportunity to attend in-person. All participants have to submit a number of group and individual projects.

1. Digital material and tutorial from the lectures

2. Online access to all lectures and workshops

Course Description

THISAM will provide 60 hours of theoretical and practical training. The thematic units will be: 1) Crisis communication with Nikolaos Panagiotou as speaker, 2) European Journalism with Christos Fragonikolopoulos as speaker 3) Media literacy with Sherri Hope Culver as speaker, 4) Disinformation with Andreas Veglis as speaker, 5) New business models in Media Organisations with Christoph Schmidt as speaker, and 6) Science Journalism with Holger Briel as speaker.

Professors from Universities abroad as well as from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and well known, awarded journalists are among the trainers of THISAM.

Participants must -in addition to the 60 teaching hours- prepare and present their projects upon arrival and at the end of the program. Also, assignments related to the subject of the lectures will be given at the end of each day. It takes an estimated 10 hours to complete the assignments given to present them during the program. Thus, we request 3 ECTS for those who participate in the program.

Evaluation/ Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

For the successful completion of the program, the participants should:

A)     have attended all the teaching units. Absences may not exceed 10% of the scheduled training hours.

B)      have submitted all the projects

C)      have paid all the tuition fees by 10th of July

Participants, who have attended but not completed successfully, will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.

Participation fees/Discount

100€ per participant.

*In case the THISAM is carried out on site: 300€ per participant.
